Pride Month, Belonging, and Mental Wellness

    3 min readJune 2026

Every June, Pride Month celebrates the history, resilience, and contributions of the LGBTQ+ community. While many people associate Pride with parades, festivals, and rainbow flags, it is also an opportunity to recognize something deeper: the importance of feeling safe, seen, and accepted for who you are.

At its core, Pride is about belonging.

For many LGBTQ+ individuals, the journey to self-acceptance has not always been simple. Some have experienced rejection, discrimination, pressure to hide parts of themselves, or the feeling that they had to choose between authenticity and acceptance. These experiences can shape how people view themselves, their relationships, and their overall well-being.

Research suggests that LGBTQ+ individuals experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, and psychological distress, largely due to experiences such as stigma, discrimination, rejection, and a lack of affirming support—not because of their identity itself (The Trevor Project, 2024).

Pride Month reminds us that support, connection, and community matter. It also creates an opportunity to normalize conversations about mental health. Seeking support, setting boundaries, building meaningful relationships, and finding affirming spaces are all important parts of overall wellness.

Whether you identify as LGBTQ+, have a loved one who does, or simply want to be a better ally, Pride invites all of us to create environments where people feel respected, valued, and safe being themselves.

Perhaps one of the most powerful things we can offer one another is acceptance without conditions.

As we celebrate Pride Month, may we also celebrate authenticity, connection, and the understanding that everyone deserves to be seen, heard, and supported exactly as they are.
